Itinerary
Day: 1 | Arrival, transfer Macushla House
On your arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport you will be warmly met by our representative who will transfer you into the vibrant Nairobi. Spend the night at Macushla House. Founded by an Irish family, Macushla House offers the amenities of a hotel in a personal and warm home environment. With two cozy lounges, a large covered verandah and a swimming pool nestled within a lush garden, this will be the perfect place to unwind after a long day of travel.
Depending on your arrival time and energy level, it may be of interest to explore the neighborhood before joining the lodge for dinner. The hotel is located within walking distance of Giraffe Manor, a conservation site for the Rothschild Giraffe. Here, you can visit an iconic colonial house – currently operating as a lodge – in addition to visiting the AFEW Giraffe Center.
Alternatively, the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage is only a short drive away, and gives visitors the opportunity to watch the adorable orphaned baby elephants interact with their caregivers and each other twice daily. For those interested in absorbing some Kenyan history and culture, the Karen Blixen and Nairobi Museums are only a short drive away, as are a number of craft centers. You will return to the lodge in time for a fresh and local evening meal, served within an intimate dining room, before returning to your private suite for the evening.
Days: 2-3 | Amboseli National Park
After an early breakfast, you will be driven to Wilson Airport, where you will board a flight to Amboseli National Park. On arrival you will be met and assisted to transfer to Amboseli Sopa Lodge. Amboseli Sopa Lodge is set in 200 acres of private land, and with a rustic charm all of its own, the lodge nestles in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro which, at almost six thousand metres, is Africa’s highest and most famous snowcapped mountain. All forms of wildlife still abound in this wilderness which continues all the way to the Amboseli National Park, an easy twenty minute drive away from the lodge. Amboseli Sopa Lodge is set within mature wooded gardens with a wide variety of trees and plants which include thorn trees, Acacias, fragrant Frangipanis, colorful bougainvillea and giant cacti which all thrive in these surroundings. The gardens are also home to numerous species of birds as well as monkeys, mongooses, squirrels, duikers, the occasional gazelle and, once in a while, even an ever inquisitive leopard.
Amboseli National Park is one of the best known wildlife destinations in Kenya, primarily for excellent sightings of elephant in the big marshy area and the magnificent view of Mount Kilimanjaro (Observation Hill offers the best vistas). Chase the perfect sight of a massive gathering of big-tusked elephants set against the backdrop of Mt Kilimanjaro. Adventures include twice-daily game drives in open safari vehicles, walks in the conservancy (led by expert Maasai guides), cultural tours and decadent bush breakfasts.
Days: 4-6 | Maasai Mara Game Reserve
After breakfast, you will be transferred to the local airstrip for your schedule flight to Maasai Mara game reserve. On arrival, you will be met and assisted transfer to Mara Sopa Lodge. Masai Mara Sopa Lodge is located high on the slopes of the Oloolaimutia Hills, Masai Mara Sopa Lodge was one of the first safari lodges to be built in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, a reason why its gardens and trees are so lush and mature. All the buildings follow the design of traditional African round houses with conical roofs, and these stretch along the line of the hills with the impressively large public area buildings and the swimming pool at their centre.
Battles between four hooves and four paws are the focus of most safari destinations, and they are magnified in the Masai Mara. Watch a hunt through the zebras' eyes and read the furtive and alert expressions in their eyes. Follow a cheetah and look at the emotion as she searches for food for her two small cubs. Midday is quiet time before an afternoon game drive, where you can expect a series of intimate scenes and the untrammeled unraveling of the Mara theater.
Every June and July, over a million wildebeest and zebra make their famous Mara River crossing to swap the Serengeti for the Masai Mara. The months of June to September sees the Mara plains flood with this influx of herds. But this is a place of mammal abundance all year around as not all wildebeest and zebra migrate. Most big cats stay put and protect their territory while they await the bounty of prey. Whenever you visit this famous reserve, you are guaranteed to see galloping herds of wildebeest, mass groups of zebra, and a wide variety of predators.
